Smew (Mergellus albellus)

Smew (Mergellus albellus)

One pair in the main garden.  The male is largely white with some black lines on the body and head. The female has a mottled greyish brown body, rusty red on top of the head and white below. Egg clutch is 6-9 creamy white eggs and ours nest in a hollowed out tree stump.  Lovely to watch them dive and swim underwater.
