The New Zealand Brown Teal are part of a
breeding program co-ordinated by One pair in our aviary. They are likely to be mistaken for either the grey or chestnut teals, the male Brown Teal is darker and less bright in coloration and has a white eye-ring, with underparts finely mottled and barred, not heavily spotted. On the sides of the male's head it is a glossed green colour. Female brown teals are extremely dark, with a narrower eye-ring than the males and only weakly mottled plumage. The female nests in a raised box (hollowed out log) fairly close to water. The egg clutch size is usually 5-8 light brown eggs.
